Not getting this insistence on a 4 vs. 5 distinction.

Normally Self has 3 bigs who rotate. Offensively there's not really a difference between the two. Defensively there is, but usually the way Self uses his rotation the first big off the bench comes in, the first big rests, 5 minutes later that big comes in for the other starter who rests 5 minutes and then the reserve big sits down. The operate more like interchangeable parts. Typically there is a 4th big who plays in foul trouble or situational minutes.

We don't typically have a 5 with a backup 5 and a 4 with a backup 4. So, I'm not sure why we're getting bogged down with the distinction.

For 2 reasons:

1. Because Dok is fouling machine

2. Because Self is best when he has a "5" who is good at defense/blocking shots.

The "Self plays bigs, not 4s and 5s" thing is irrelevant here; when talking about substitution patterns, Coleby won't ever replace Preston/Bragg.  Unless something goes horribly wrong, you'll never see him on the floor with Udoka.  He is Udoka's caddy.

And he also compared him to Thomas Robinson... I'm just not seeing it.

Was that quote by any chance pre-knee injury??

"...good at defense/blocking shots..."

Coleby's blocks per minute were over twice as good as Lucas's.
He is also a good rebounder.
He's slow on defense.

We aren't saying he's a top notch player.
We are saying he's a perfectly good backup 5, or 'bigger' big who guards the other teams big, which he is.

7-10 minutes a game is what we want from him.
He's a 6 foot 9 senior with good blocking and rebounding skills.
He might start on a few Big 12 teams.

We are going to need more than 7-10mpg at that spot.

Hopefully Preston can guard other teams 5s for stretches too.

We just watched our team get dominated by jodan bell who is far from a future NBA star. And then watched a national title game where a guy colebys size would have had no chance against the bigs from UNC or Gonzaga.

Hopefully coleby can prove me wrong. I'm just not a believer and think we need more at that spot if we want to win a national title next year.

You can't have everything.  There is nothing remotely troubling about going into a season with a frontcourt of Udoka, Preston, Bragg, Coleby and Lightfoot.

There won't be five better frontcourts.

Re: 2017-18 Top 25

We have a 7 foot 280 lb player on our team.
Coleby is 6 foot 9 240 lbs.
UNC just won the title, their comparable backup is 1 inch taller than Coleby and weighs the same.

I understand that this year we had problems with interior depth.
It was most definitely a weakness.
But everyone is a year older and we get an All American 6 foot 10 forward.

Basically you are saying we can't win a national title with Coleby playing 7 minutes a game. Those 7 minutes are going to be the deal breaker.
Bummer everyone.

Fucking per minute stats.

Dwight averaged .5 blocks per 40.

Jamari junior year averaged 2.1 blocks per 40.

Jamari senior year averaged 2.6 blocks  per 40.

Re: 2017-18 Top 25

I would say the bigger concern is scoring from the '4' if Graham and Svi return.
How good is Preston and if he's still raw, will Bragg be here, and what will he bring in his junior season?
Newman is the wild card.

Swapping around Coleby, Lightfoot, Preston, Bragg and Udoka for two spots, I don't see an issue.

134/40 is 3.35.

12/3.35 = 3.6.
Math is, once again, hard.

I was pretty excited and hopeful for all of Maris seasons.   Colby had pretty good athleticism prior to his injury.

LMAO.

we lose Lucas and add Preston. That's good. But....

Do you really expect Dok to be able to average 33min per game?

So are you using per minute moving forward and not using per 40s anymore?

Or just picking and choosing depending on which supports your argument the best?

Upon double checking I grabbed the wrong column for Coleby. So I stand coredcted on the per 40s for him.

Re: 2017-18 Top 25

Regardless of whether it is per minute or per 40 ( is which I meant to say ) you compared Jamari's per 40's to Dwight's per minute ( maybe -- I'm not even sure where you got that number ).

Per 40 is used because there are 40 minutes in a regular basketball game.
Whatever system you want to use, Dwight doubled Lucas this season, and is higher than Jamari ever was in any season.

The other 'lord' was in regards to your assumption that every minute that Coleby doesn't play, Udoka has to.
40 - 7 = 33 in your world.
Here is the real world : Udoka + Coleby + Lightfoot + Bragg + Preston = 80.

Please do not respond with 'I don't think Lightfoot can handle 16 minutes a game.'

Re: 2017-18 Top 25

Does this work for you Illy?

Udoka 22
Preston 21
Bragg 19
Coleby 7
Lightfoot 6

The other 5 minutes left over from the 80 a result of playing just Udoka/Preston/Bragg with Svi as the '4'.

No.

I'd prefer:

Dok 28
Preston 27
Bragg 24
Coleby/Lightfoot 1
